Volunteers Initiative Nepal received an international volunteer coordinator on 15th September 2015 for six weeks program. He is a returned volunteer who had been with VIN last year in a different program. His name is Nick Gilks from England. He is assisting the volunteer coordinator Sushma and Volunteer Manager Dinesh in this project.Nick has edited some VIN’s documents and has been helping the Volunteer coordinator for mobilizing other volunteer and doing follow ups, reports writing, news writing, documentation.
VIN received 13 new volunteers for the intake of 1st October. Nick helped VIN providing practical tips for the new intake which was very useful. When new volunteers start work with VIN, they spend their first night in the Premium hotel in Thamel before being transported to the VIN offices for their three day induction. For those starting on October 1st things were a little different. Normally transported to the office by taxi, the severe petrol shortage meant a morning walk where they were welcomed by Dinesh and introduced to the rest of the staff.
New volunteers spent the day learning something of the Nepali culture, Nepali language and the organization, and finishing with a quick question and answer session with the volunteer coordinators. That might have been the end of the formal induction but it wasn’t the end of their day by any means. With Nick , they gathered along with other previous volunteers in the hotel foyer in the evening before going to OR2K, on the way being shown useful places like the ATM machines and the supermarket by Nick. Overall his coordination was very fruitful and helpful for the VIN .
