LIFE SKILLS AND CAPACITY DEVELOPMENT – ENGLISH LESSONS IN KAVRESTHALI COMMUNITY
For the past two months I have been conducting English lessons for a group of women in a small village not far from Kathmandu city, called Kavresthali. The women live very busy lives in Kavresthali with a lot of pressure and responsibilities to take care of their family and home, along with many religious events throughout the year.
For many of these women, the idea of English lessons is a luxury and they find it difficult to find the time in their busy schedules to attend English lessons regularly and consistently.

However, there has been one women who I could rely on to attend class every day. Ishowri phuyal, aged 42 years is permanent resident of Kavresthali, living with her husband and a son. She is also a member of women group named Griha Laxmi Women’s Group. Despite living a life of responsibility and expectations she arrives with a huge smile on her face, pen and notebook in hand. Her next son is studying in Australia and her goal of visiting him one day is the motivation she needs to persist with her English studies.
We have been working together to develop her English skills to enable her to communicate independently when she visits her son in Australia. The English language is not an easy language to learn but through all the hurdles and triumphs, her infectious laugh supports and encourages the other women in our lessons. I have seen her confidence grow as she works hard to pronounce new words correctly and speak with accurate sentence structure.
