1st December, 2014: Human Trafficking is a major problem in Nepal so Volunteers Initiative Nepal decided to implement a trafficking project in the communities. The pilot project took place in two Village Development Committees in Okhaldhunga, Nepal. Okhaldhunga is a very poor, rural district of Nepal where access to education is limited for many families and most people rely on subsistence agriculture for food. The goal of the project is to educate woman and girls in the community about trafficking with the hopes that they will educate others in their community in order to prevent trafficking.
Our volunteer Maddie Craig from USA facilitated 6 trainings with a total of 229 community members. Most of the participants in the trainings were girls in school and women from the women’s cooperative. Overall, the participants had very little knowledge about the issue and the facts about human trafficking and they had never discussed the effects of trafficking on a victim, or what might cause a person to be trafficked in the first place. Many sessions led to a deeper discussion of the status of girls in Nepal and women’s rights. By the end of the training the women and girls left with a broader knowledge of the issue and the tools to protect and empower themselves and their community.
We welcome you to participate in our program “Women Trafficking Prevention” Program. Join us.
