Volunteers Initiative Nepal are working in various program in Jitpur community. Among them Youth Empowerment program is one of the main program. As part of the Youth Empowerment Program two international volunteers are working together with Volunteers Initiative Nepal (VIN) at Jitpur Higher Secondary School on August 2016 . Etienne from France and Nawid from Germany give classes and share their experiences with grade 11 and 12 students. The course which takes place after the morning classes at 10AM for one hour is optional for the students. Everyday a small group of students is interactively learning about the English language, about career planning and life skills. The aim of the course is to empower the youth by showing them how to deal with the professional world and making them more self-confident when planning their future by providing them with a proper skill set.
In the beginning of the course students learned how to read and interpret local newspaper articles and how they are structured. The motivation behind it was to improve their capability to analyses articles as well as to encourage them to inform themselves about world news. In further classes the students were given a specific topic like for example the American Elections 2016 and were encouraged to discuss those topics with the volunteers, which was supposed to improve the students’ speaking skills. For improving the career development skills our volunteers focused on the basics of a professional job application, e.g. how to write a CV and a cover letter in English and how to prepare for a job interview. For the latter it was crucial to show the students how to speak and present themselves in public and therewith how to organize thoughts and bring them across to a respective audience.
Apart from the academic classes the volunteers also organised sports and music lessons to strengthen the team spirit of the students and to foster their creativity.
