On May 1st, VIN welcomed twelve new international volunteers, who are going to work on a long-Midterm periods. Those fresh volunteers from the Netherlands, Germany, France, Italy and Japan have come to Nepal to participate in various programs VIN has developed: child care in orphanage home: Early Children Development (ECD), Public health and Medical care,Water Sanitation And Hygiene Wash (WASH), Women empowerment, and Teaching English at Buddhist monastery.
Even though the pick up at the airport didn’t go as smoothly as expected (which is fairly common in some airline companies having a tendency to forget luggage along the way), everything got back in order. Thus the volunteers’ traditional induction could begin the next morning. Indeed, they received basic knowledge about Nepal and how to get around easily during their stay: health and cultural tips as well as a Nepali class and the VIN’s overall view and achievement. After their first induction till 5 in the evening, they went back to Thamel (where they stay during their induction) along with a coordinator who showed them the ropes and took them for dinner in this busy yet appealing area. The coordinator helped the new volunteers to get the local sim and showed the ATM and money exchange which are very essential to get the information on the very beginning in the new country.
The second and last day of induction, the new volunteers had some specifics and personalized information about their respective program, in order to be as prepared as possible before being placed into the new and exciting Nepali life. They were given the schedule of their chosen work. Afterwards, they were placed in their host family/orphanage/monastery and are now ready to make the most of their volunteering time!
