As the idea of School’s Nature Club for Kavresthali Secondary School got in our mind for teaching children about environment conservation we wanted to give it a kick start as soon as possible. Since things could not be initiated without the help of the school’s support, we talked to Mr. Prahalad Pokhrel, Principal of Kavresthali Secondary School, regarding the nature club project by involving children between 6-9 years we wanted to implement in the school. After the conversation with him we were able to come up with the schedule for the teaching children about the environment conservation project.
The meeting with the school’s principal was conducted on 17th July, 2016. Later on 21st July, 2016, we interacted with the children. For teaching children about the environment conservation, we introduced them with the ecosystem with posters we had prepared and with the doodles scribbled in the blackboard. We also taught the students about the danger of deforestation and the pollution in Kathmandu valley and cities surrounding the valley. Later, the students were described about the objectives of the Nature Club we were trying to setup.
The major objective of this club is to teaching children about environment conservation and to make them think about the world surrounding them. Our ultimate goal was to make them take initiation for the nature’s club and carry on the activities in the long run. We described them few activities like planting trees, creating slogans and organizing garbage cleanup program in their school for teaching children about the environment conservation. We asked them if they wanted to be involved in the project students were so enthusiastic and thus almost all of them wanted to be involved in the project. It was already a great success for us when the students showed their interest for the project. But since it was a little impossible to include all the students in the club their teachers discussed and decided on who would be directly be involved with the Nature club.
Right after the team was decided, the children created little posters and made slogans they could post on the walls of their classrooms. At the end of the session, we asked them to bring some plastic bottles and seeds for the next day activity. Later, children brought a lot of stuff: the plastic bottles, good soil and many plants. We made a circle with them and we showed the children how to cut the bottles. They accomplished their task quickly, and from their own initiative they filled the bottles with soil and planted their plants.
After a little discussion they aligned themselves along the covered playground’s wall. To make them more involved, we asked them to clean up the place and to pick the plastic from the bottles’ waste. The children are all excited and we are going to teach children about the environment conservation after a week.
