23rd April, 2014 VIN conducted awareness campaign with women on breast cancer in Taluwa VCD, Okhaldhunga. Public health team with international volunteers has conducted a day campaign with women to aware women about breast cancer and to teach them the techniques of self breast examination.
VIN has been conducting awareness programs on women’s health issues since 2009. On this context VIN has conducted this awareness campaign with women from Okhaldhunga. The major objective of campaign was to orient women about reproductive health and breast cancer, to display the cases of breast cancer, to motivate women to practice prevention and teach them self breast examination to detect breast cancer in early stages.
In the first part of campaign it was discussed on women’s reproductive health, female reproductive organs, prevention, breast cancer, signs and symptoms of breast cancer, stages of breast cancer, examination and method of prevention.
In the second part women were taught on self-breast examination to detect breast cancer in an early stage. Women were trained on physical examination of breast and digital examination with typical characteristics of cancer.
It was found that women from Taluwa, Okhaldhunga were benefited from breast cancer campaign. It was also supported by the view expressed by one of the participant- “We learnt a lot about reproductive health. We were suffered from problem like these, today we got opportunities to learn about the problem. We will use these skills in daily life. Self-Breast examination was really useful. ” Bimala Ghimire
It is concluded that campaigns conducted in community of Taluwa largely appeared to be effective in promoting women health. Volunteers contributed in conducting campaigns and increase awareness about reproductive health and breast cancer.
