Post Disaster Relief Work, 09/06/2015  to  29/06/2015

Dear New Volunteer,

I guess I will start of by telling a little bit about myself. My name is Anna Cuevas. I’m 19 years old and I’m from Massachusetts, USA. I currently go to school in Vermont and I’m majoring in Film. I was supposed to go to Nepal in May through VIN with a group of students from my college. When the earthquake happened, my college would not allow us to go. Before, we were supposed to build composting toilets and teach elementary aged kids English grammar. I understood my school’s concern with still going, but I felt that volunteering was needed more after the earthquake. I decided to go to Nepal by myself to volunteer for three weeks in VIN’s

Post Disaster Relief program. When I first got to Nepal, I was so scared. I had never been out of the United States before. I was really homesick for the first week or so and cried nearly every night. I thought, “What have I gotten myself into?” and as the first two weeks went by, I realized that I had gotten myself into the most amazing experience I had ever had.

It is hard to do construction every day. It is tiring and sometimes you’ll feel like you just cannot get through the day, but please trust me on this: it is so rewarding at the end and it is worth all of the blood, sweat, and tears.

My advice to you: Keep an open mind and allow yourself to surrender to the will of the unknown experience. You are going to grow a lot and will fall in love with human connection.

I have met so many amazing volunteers, local and international, while here. The host

family were some of the greatest people I have ever met. They are my second family. I hate having to say goodbye to all of these people that I have met, because honestly, they have all impacted my life so much in such a short period of time and I hate the fact that I may never see some of these people again.

So please, New Volunteer, enjoy every single second of this. It will go by so quickly. I hope this experience impacts your life in a positive light, because it definitely has for me. Have a great time,
