The objectives of the Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Project are to raise living standards in rural areas of Nepal by: (i) delivering sustainable health and hygiene benefits to the rural population through improvements in water supply and sanitation; (ii) improving rural real incomes by assisting women to identify ways to earn income from time saved in carrying water; and (iii) improving government.
In the rural area of Nepal, access to sanitary facility and water is a challenge. Nepali women 15 years and older had a literacy rate of 17% In 1991, and in 2015, the literacy rate increased to 57%. However, for the older women of Mudkhu Bhanjyang, literacy is still extremely low. For the rural Nepalese, there is also the additional challenge of inadequate sanitary facility and convenient access to water. Education is a key component in acquiring knowledge and developing skills for good health practices and promote sanitary living conditions. Despite these shortcomings, certain practices can dramatically prevent disease transmission and occurence. One of the simplest and most important habit we can do is washing our hands properly.
VIN is working with women education and life skills project in Goldhunga from August 2018. VIN has mobilised the volunteer for delivering English class and life skills classes. Women are looking excited to learn basic english so there is continue classes from August. We have had the pleasure of meeting and working with the women of Mudkhu Bhanjyang, who always walk in with a smile and ready to learn. We reviewed and discussed where germs can be found, how germs are transmitted, what is flu, proper hand washing technique and when to wash our hands. With some hand sanitizers, we practised the technique and had some great laughs. For the rest of the two weeks, we would start class with sanitizing our hands, thus, developing a habit to promote a the women are so compliant and proudly remembers.
