26th March: A household survey conducted by VIN and Danish volunteers has shown that Jitpur still needs 151 toilets to be built. This survey was done to find out the households without toilets and to assess people’s practice on hygiene and sanitation in Jan 2014. It was found that 151 households (out of 917) do not have toilets. Most of the People from those households were found practicing open defecation and few of them were sharing toilets with neighbors. Most of them couldn’t afford to construct toilet for themselves due to their poor economic condition.
VIN has been supporting with essential materials and manpower to build toilets in Jitpur since 2009. Volunteers on Construction and manual work are contributing as an important manpower to build toilets. Also they are the strong motivating factor for the people to build toilets in house. VIN has supported 180 toilets till date. Through peer education community has built 19 toilets by themselves. VIN has successfully implemented toilet construction project in coordination with Women groups, Village development committee (VDC) and Community water supply and sanitation section of Department of water supply and sewerage (DWSS), Kathmandu. The project coordinated by VIN in Jitpur is considered as one of the best project that DWSS has coordinated with.
VIN contributes 100$ and administrative support; VIN volunteers contribute manual work, trainings on hygiene and sanitation and regular monitoring and DWSS & VDC support in some material supply to build a toilet. VIN considers volunteers support and donation for toilet construction as the crucial part for the success of the project.
