VIN conducted host family meeting on 16th of May, 2014 to discuss and exchange the opinion on the placement of volunteers in their home. VIN has recently updated the list of host families where there are 14 host families excluding monasteries and orphanages. VIN conducts this type of meeting every year to discuss their experiences and upfront the problems faced, if any.
On this day, the main agendas discussed were food provided to volunteers, about cleanliness, security, communication done to volunteers and do’s and don’ts. VIN also offered for Volunteer Management Trainings to the host families where they had positive stance on it. The host families seem to be happy and satisfied with the proper behavior of volunteers. Despite of their positive feedback on volunteers, they shared some of the problems they had during the placement.
The host families, in maximum number, explained that language and culture is one of the biggest problems during the placement. The host families further said that the cultural tips provided during induction is very helpful and important. Also host families were concerned about the security of volunteers so they want clear communication from volunteers.
Overall, host families were very pleased to receive and place the international volunteers in their home as it holds a lot of positive impact on their family and society. Host family experience is one part of the program which is liked by almost every volunteer. It’s a chance to exchange the culture and language and to know about the lifestyle of local Nepali people.
