In memory of George Stocker

George Stocker 1931 to … November 8, 2022.

Education: Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) from the University of Toronto Faculty of Dentistry.

Contributions:

Volunteer and Program Sponsor at Volunteers Initiative Nepal (VIN) from October 2016 to November 2022 …

George and Daisy conducted teachers’ training for primary English teachers in a rural community of Kathmandu. They brought ten laptops to VIN’s computer learning centre. Since then, George and Daisy have supported Dalit community empowerment projects by providing essential funds and skills. Hundreds of Dalit community members have benefited through VIN-established sustainable food production through micro-irrigation water tank projects. Thirty-one water tanks of 4000 liters were successfully installed for the Dalit families.

George and Daisy were supposed to arrive on November 7 to Nepal for the 4th time to support VIN’s established community empowerment projects. The West Jet delayed their flights for two days. Due to the delays, they had to wait at Vancouver airport for two days. They had a transit in Seoul, Korea. After they arrived at Seoul Airport, while going upper level at the airport, George suddenly collapsed and passed away. We lost this generous man physically forever. George was an extraordinary kind-hearted, great man. We are heartbroken by his demise but will always follow the path he has shown us. We will do our best to achieve the dream George had seen to empower the marginalised people of Okhaldhunga. His work will always remind us about him.

His other contributions:

Established Learning English With Laughter Ltd. in August 1990. I went to Czechoslovakia with Daisy in 1990 and helped set up the country’s first private language school. They were responsible for teaching and writing all the materials we used in the school. Then this movement supported thousands of teachers worldwide by creating ESL resources.

Established Successful ESL Ltd. In March 2006:

Provided Consultant service at the University of Luhansk, Ukraine, in September 2001:  George and Daisy traveled to the University of Luhansk in Eastern Ukraine to give workshops and give them an adult curriculum.

Consultant Writer between Aug 1999 – Aug 2000 in CDI Computers, Londrina, Brazil:
Theyprepared an ESL curriculum for this franchise of 250 schools when they decided to enlarge their scope to include English classes. George and Daisy traveled around the country, visiting their schools on two successive summers, giving workshops at every stop.

ESL teacher: Private language school in Hong Kong between Jul 1999 – Aug 1999.

A private language school asked George and Daisy to prepare a curriculum for children for their schools. They went to Hong Kong and taught there for a month so that they could determine the level of English needed in their ESL textbooks.

Consultant and teacher: The English Centre Aug 1990 – May 1997 Karlovy Vary, The Czech Republic

In 1990 George and Daisy helped a Czech lady set up a private language school in Karlovy Vary. They both had full-time teaching positions and wrote all of the school’s materials.

George was an extraordinary kind-hearted, great man. We are heartbroken by his demise but will always follow the path he has shown us. We will do our best to achieve the dream George had seen to empower the marginalised people of Okhaldhunga. His work will always remind us about him.

Volunteering with VIN was an incredibly experience! I spent an amazing 2 weeks working in 4 schools teaching about disasters and preparedness while enhancing the childrens english. Everyone I met was so lovely and helpful enciting me into their culture. While in Okhaldhunga I got to see multiple festivals including Gai Jatra and Teej, which was unforgettable and really made my time in Nepal. I'm so glad VIN allowed me to see the beautiful sights and culture if Nepal and I wish to come back soon!
