“During my time in Nepal, I joined Volunteers Initiative Nepal (VIN) as part of their Public Health project. Each day, I traveled to different communities around Jitpur Phedi to hold awareness sessions on diabetes and hypertension. After each presentation, my team and I would check blood sugar and blood pressure levels, listen to people’s stories, note down symptoms or medical histories, and refer individuals to the local health clinic when needed. It was a beautiful hands on experience. Being welcomed into these communities and engaging in meaningful conversations about diabetes and hypertension allowed us to explore not only medical solutions, but also the small lifestyle changes that could make a lasting difference. Working closely with local volunteers made the experience even more meaningful—there was a beautiful sense of mutual learning and respect in everything we did. Living with a host family brought an added layer of connection. From sharing meals to learning about daily customs, I got to experience Nepali life not just as a visitor, but as part of a home. Lastly, in between the workdays and weekends, I was able to explore Nepal—its landscapes, traditions, and quiet moments of beauty. Whether wandering alone or alongside other international volunteers, I left feeling deeply grateful for everything I have learned and the relationships I have build.”
