I enjoyed my time at VIN on women trafficking prevention project. I came in thinking that all this would be for me is a volunteer opportunity, but it slowly became much more than that. The best part about VIN is their cultural presence and positive regard by the communities that they service. For that reason, I found the atmosphere to be very encouraging. It was nice to see how communities have worked together in community development, and to share stories with local volunteers. Whenever I wanted to learn something culturally, like cooking for instance, I was never treated as a burden but rather, community members would be excited to show me their ways—especially the dancing; Nepali people can really move! I was also lucky to have arrived during Dashain, which afforded me the experience to really connect and integrate with my family. It wasn’t that great for work production haha but as I said, it’s the whole experience that was worth the trip.
Regarding my project, I enjoyed it for what it was. If I had stayed maybe a few extra weeks I think I would have gotten everything that I had come here for. For the six weeks that I was here I think I am satisfied with what I have accomplished, in the time allocated. My advice to future volunteers would be to keep an open mind and to be flexible, with what you are able to produce and with your project goals. Nepali time is a real thing; so do not come in expecting to change everything, because in essence that is not what you are here to do. You are here to supply a small role in an overall vision for VIN, and in any small contribution that may be, is more valuable to the community than you expect it to be.
VIN helped me fall in love with Nepal. I now know that I am certainly returning to Nepal, and it pleases me to say that I’m sure VIN will regard me just as pleasantly as when I first arrived. Namaste and see you soon my friends!
