Testimonial
My name is Henni, I’m 23 years old and from Germany. I volunteered for four weeks in the Teaching English in Nunnery Project at the Kirtipur Monastery, where I taught English to young nuns. Using my background in psychology, I adapted my teaching to meet the girls' individual needs and learning styles, which helped boost their confidence and motivation to speak English. Living and teaching in a Buddhist nunnery was a unique cultural experience that taught me not only patience and flexibility, but also deep respect for different ways of life. I improved my teaching skills, cross-cultural communication, and learned to work effectively in a completely new environment. I was deeply impressed by the strong sense of community among the nuns, and I will never forget their kindness, warmth, and incredible hospitality. I feel truly grateful to have experienced this way of life and to have been welcomed so openly. There are many moments I will never forget—from the joyful and heartwarming classes with the young nuns, to the unforgettable trips and shared adventures with fellow volunteers. Whether we were exploring the stunning surroundings, sharing stories over dinner, or supporting each other in our daily work, these experiences created bonds and memories that will stay with me for a lifetime. I will recommend volunteering and will never forget that time in Nepal.
