Prakriti Thapa Magar : sponsor a child in Nepal

Prakriti Thapa Magar

Who is Prakriti?

“Aren’t you tired, Prakriti?”

“No.”

“If I were you, I might feel troublesome to go to school, like when it is raining.”

“Other students sometimes do not go to school, but I attend classes every day.” The girl looked back, and showed us her lovely smile.

She is Prakriti Thapa Magar, a 14-year-old girl, residing in Nalsu, Taluwa, Siddhicharan Municipality, Okhaldhunga, Nepal. She is a 7th-grade student at Raktamala Basic School, Jordhara. When classes are over, she starts to walk to her village with her friends. She keeps walking on dirt roads, sometimes uphill and sometimes downhill. Sometimes the roads get narrow, sometimes the roads get steep, and sometimes they see snakes get out from the grass. She has more and more sweat gradually, but she doesn’t complain about anything. It takes nearly an hour and a half for her to get to her village, where they have no shop or hospital.

Asked if it is hard, she answers with a slight smile, “no. I have got used to it.” Then, she starts to help housework. She eats nothing until dinner time. Despite this distance and hard circumstance, everyone admires her attendance record to classes. She was absent from school only for 2 days last year.

She is strong both physically and mentally. She likes doing exercise. It is understandable that she says, “I want to be a police officer.”

Prakriti tries to keep calm and smiley all the time both at school and at home, but going to school is not easy for her. Here “going to school” does not mean “walking to school for an hour and a half; it means “keep going to school with financial burden”. In fact, her family’s limited income, presents challenges in providing her with the resources she needs to thrive.

Family & Challenges

Prakriti lives with her mother, Aasha Maya Thapa Magar. The family has five members. Their main income source is agriculture, earning them merely 7,000 NPR monthly (approximately $52 USD). It is less than one-quarter of the average income in Nepal. This limited income makes it very challenging to cover basic needs and support Prakriti’s education.

Here are some of the key challenges they face:

  • Balancing Needs: The family struggles to meet basic needs like food, housing, clothing, education, and healthcare for all five family members.
  • Supporting Education: Even basic educational expenses are a significant burden on the family’s limited resources.

The Need for Sponsorship

Sponsorship is crucial for Prakriti. It will provide her with:

  • Essential School Supplies: This includes books, stationery, and a school uniform.
  • Support for Educational Expenses: Help with school fees and other learning materials.
  • Access to Healthcare: Ensuring she can access medical care when needed.

The Impact of Sponsorship

  • Keep her in School: Providing the resources she needs to continue her education.
  • Support her Development: Enabling her to participate in extracurricular activities and pursue her interests.
  • Ease the Family’s Burden: Reducing the financial strain on her family.
  • Empower her Future: Helping her build a foundation for a brighter future.

Conclusion

Prakriti Thapa Magar is a promising young girl with a strong desire to learn and succeed. Sponsorship will provide her with the stability and opportunity she needs to reach her full potential. Sponsorship offers a vital lifeline, enabling Prakriti to continue her education.
