Who is Manisha?
“How many hours do you study at home, Manisha?”
“3 hours.”
“3 hours? That is a lot.”
“I spend 2 hours for homework, and 1 hour for self-study.”
She is a 13-year-old girl, living in a remote village in Nepal. Her daily routine is like this; She gets up at 5 AM and studies for an hour. She helps her housework while preparing for going to school. She leaves home before 9AM, walking to school for more that an hour. After classes are finished at 4 PM, again she spends more than an hour to get home, and helps housework such as plowing fields and cooking dinner. It is only after she finishes eating dinner that she can work on 2-hour-study. She goes to bed at 10 PM.
Her name is Manisha Basnet, a bright and hardworking 13-year-old girl, residing in Nishankhe, Thulachhap, Siddhicharan Municipality, Okhaldhunga, Nepal. She’s currently in the 7th grade at Raktamala Basic School, Jordhara.
“You really want to be a lawyer?”
“Yes.”
“Is there anyone who became a lawyer around your village?”
“No, but I seriously want to be a lawyer.”
Manisha talks about her dream confidently both at school and at home. She knows that she has to keep studying at least until getting a Bachelor degree.
Despite her strong desire. her family’s income presents challenges in ensuring Manisha has all the resources she needs to thrive.
Family & Challenges
There are 7 family members in Manisha’s family, including her grandparents, parents, and her sisters. Her father Nabaraj Basnet is now living in another town to make their end meet. “He is working in a factory to support our family, but even though he is doing so, our monthly income is only from 10,000 NRP to 12,000 NRS (from 73 USD to 87 USD)”, Manisha’s mother Indira Basnet says in a gloomy look. Their income seems be less than the half of the average in Nepal. “I know I need to give education to all of my three daughters, but we have much difficulty in this village here.”
Here are some of the key challenges they face:
