Karuna Bishowkarma

Who is Karuna?

“Do you enjoy school, Karuna?”

“Yes, absolutely.”

“What specifically do you feel enjoyable at school?”

“I feel everything enjoyable. I can study, talk with friends, and interact with VIN staffs like you.”

While walking to her home after school, a girl answered our questions with a smile and confidence. School is literally fun for her.

She is Karuna Bishowkarma, a 13-year-old girl residing in Bhadaure, Okhaldhunga, Nepal. She is a 6th-grade student at Raktamala Basic School in Jordhara.

“What subject do you like?”

“I like the Nepali and English class, especially reading.”

“Why?”

“Because I can learn new things, new perspectives, new vocabularies from passages. That feels truly learning for me.”

She is actively participating in every aspect of her school life. She plays with her friends in break time. She also likes a dancing program both at school and at her community. “I will continue my study at least until grade 12th“, she says with a strong will.

Despite her passion for school life, it is quite difficult for her family to keep her in school. Her family’s income presents challenges in providing her with the resources she needs to succeed in her education.

Family & Challenges

Karuna lives with their parents, Tilak Bishowkarma being her father, and Kamala Bishowkarma being her mother. There are 6 members in her family, including Karuna’s brothers and sister. “We have some lands and fields to grow crops, those are not for selling but just for us eating. We of course buy daily products such as masala and oil”, Kamala told us their struggle. “We also carry mud and stones as a one-day-labor around here, and we earn only 600 NPR (about $4 USD) in a day. It hurts our backs and hands a lot. By doing that, we have been managing to send our children to school now.”

Their labor is hard and income is unstable. It is challenging to cover all expenses, including Karuna’s education and other necessities. Although Karuna herself believes her potential, and her parents understand the value of education, in reality their future is unclear under the current financial situation. “We sincerely hope to get support for our children”, Kamala put her hands together at the end of our interview.

The family faces these key challenges:

  • Managing Expenses: Balancing their income to cover food, housing, clothing, healthcare, and education for all family members requires careful planning.
  • Educational Costs: Ensuring access to quality education for Karuna and potentially other children in the family can be a financial strain.

The Need for Sponsorship

Sponsorship is important for Karuna. It will provide her with:

  • School Supplies: Essential materials such as books, stationery, and a school uniform.
  • Financial Aid: Help with school fees and other educational expenses.
  • Healthcare Access: Ensuring she can access medical care when needed.

The Impact of Sponsorship

Sponsoring Karuna will have a positive impact on her life and her family. It will:

  • Allow her to continue her education without financial concerns.
  • Enable her to participate in extracurricular activities and pursue her interests.
  • Reduce the financial burden on her family, allowing them to better meet their needs.

Conclusion

Karuna Bishowkarma is a promising young girl with a bright future ahead of her. Sponsorship will provide her with the support and opportunities she needs to achieve her goals and dreams.
