My friend and I chose to do the medical care internship with VIN as part of our university’s medical elective. Our internship was all based in Jitpur Phedi, a rural farming community just outside Kathmandu.
There were three aspects to our internship: working at the local health post/clinic, running a mobile health clinic in schools and teaching them about oral and hand hygiene, and meeting with women’s groups to take their blood pressure in order to collect data for Dr Laxmi (who works for VIN) for future projects and reports. There was a good variety with the three projects and being able to work with different types and groups of people was a real plus.
In terms of food and accommodation, we stayed with a host family in the community who provided us with everything we needed. They were extremely hospitable and the experience gave us a good insight into Nepali life.
Overall, the experience VIN provided us with was exactly what we were hoping for, so definitely worth it if any of the programmes they offer appeal to you!
