I was doing a unit at the University of Tasmania called Volunteering in Asia. My teacher, Jo Ingram had worked with VIN before, and talked about VIN regularly during class. As above, Jo talked about VIN a lot. We looked at a lot of volunteer organisations, and many of them had quite a few unethical practices. VIN also expressed their goals and standards explicitly and I was satisfied that VIN had sustainable long-term goals. VIN is also a lot more reasonably priced than many other organisations.
I tried to have a realistic and mildly-sceptical attitude. I thought that I probably wouldn’t write much; rather I would just edit things and sit in the office. This was not the case, I wrote a lot of things and I am happy with the amount that I produced. I was worried that I would not produce enough material given the time frame. I was also worried that my writing style and subject might not suit the publication that I was working for. I overcame this by just trying to write as much as I could. I didn’t really have many challenges during my time in Nepal.
