Who is Yunisha?
In a classroom of a remote village, there is a girl actively participating in the class. She stares at the teachers’ eyes, paying attention to their explanation. It looks like she tries not to miss every single word the teachers say. Whenever the teachers give a question to the whole, she is the first one who answers clearly in a loud voice. The teacher and classmates say, “she gets the highest score in the exam. She is the top here in our school.”
Yunisha Katwal, a hardworking 11-year-old girl, resides in Nishankhe, Thulachhap of Siddhicharan Municipality, Okhaldhunga, Nepal. She is a student at Raktamala Basic School, Jordhara. She excels in her study, but study is only a part of aspect of her life.
“What do you do after you go back home from school, Yunisha?”
“I help my mother with doing housework.”
As soon as she got home from school, she changes her uniform to do housework. She one day harvests corn. She one day goes walk for goats. It is only after she finishes eating dinner that she can works on her homework.”
Asked about what she wants to be in the future, she answers clearly, “I want to be a lawyer.”
“Oh, are you sure? Why lawyer? Isn’t it hard?”
“Because I want to build up community with no injustices”.
Her face and voice seem to be definitely serious.
Despite her talent and strong desire, she told us her hardships with a grim face, “our problem is money. We villagers here are poor.” Her family’s income presents challenges in ensuring Yunisha has all the resources she needs to thrive.
Family & Challenges
Yunisha’s family has seven members: her father Subash Katwal, her mother Anjana Katwal, their 4 daughters including Yunisha, and their son. Subash and Anjana still take care of 4 of their children.
“We have a shop selling daily goods, but now we only have little income after the COVID period. We have been renting loan for the education of our children”, Anjana told us about their struggle. “We have no work here in the village, my husband and I reached over 40 years old, so we cannot work abroad, either.”
In that difficult situation, their children are the big hope for Anjana. All of their daughters and son get the 1st or 2nd highest score at school. “Our generation could not get education, so I sincerely want them to be well-educated and get jobs in the future.”
