Introduction 

Khila is famous in her school for her ability and passion to teach her friends. Anytime the teachers need someone to lead the class, Khila is the first one to raise her hand. She idolizes her teacher and dreams of being one too.

Khila Thapa Magar is a 7-year-old studying in Grade 2 at Shree Sapta Kanya Basic School, Okhaldhunga. She is originally from Rawabesnsi -3, Khotang. It takes five hours for her to travel to the school, and therefore she stays with different relatives near her school. Her living situation isn’t ideal most of the time. But her determination to study shines despite many challenges in her life.  

Family & Challenges 

Khila Thapa Magar lives with parents Homraj Thapa Magar and Gita Thapa Magar, alongside 3 sisters during long holidays.  She relies on relatives and other people in the village when she has to go to school. The family depends on farming, earning only NPR 30,000 per year. Although young, you’ll find Khila grazing cattle, cutting grass and fodder for them, always with a bright smile.  Such little earnings and resources limit her chance at nutritional access, healthcare and education. For her, attending school is the only way to freedom. However, the financial hardship puts the child’s education at constant risk.
