Traffic Management

Program Fees Traffic Management

Congestion and poor traffic management are arguably the most visible and audible problems to afflict Kathmandu.  VIN are looking for volunteers to help perform a valuable and socially important task, assisting Nepal’s Traffic Police in traffic management and provide road user education.

As people from rural districts of Nepal continue to make their way towards the capital the volume of traffic in Kathmandu Valley also increases.  Volume now far outstrips the capacity of the road network.  And there is little hope for the future; road development being limited due to poor planning and leadership.

As volume of traffic increases, so do the number of deaths on the roads.  In 2012 the number of serious accidents was estimated at 130, per day, along with thousands of minor ones.

VIN are looking for committed volunteers to work in traffic management with traffic police to minimize traffic related problem.  You will have the opportunity to assist the Kathmandu Traffic Police in management of the road networks and you will help to provide education to road users.  You will also be able to conduct surveys to inform future management and assist with campaigns, such as the ‘No Horn’ campaign.

VIN is a non-commercial, charitable organisation whose overriding mission is the empowerment of marginalised, rural communities in Nepal, with a particular focus on women and children.  Since 2007 we have worked with Jitpurphedi community, 12km from Kathmandu, and now look forward to initiating our work in Okhaldhunga, in the Everest Region.  By taking part in in this program you will be supporting our efforts in these communities, helping to promote our relationships with partner organisations and raising our visibility.

During your placement you will live in Kathmandu with a Nepali host family, where you will be able to become immersed in the Nepali culture and language, away from the busy roads.
