To raise awareness about Human Trafficking, VIN is providing Human Trafficking classes in different schools. The goal is to educate students about the subject through an participative and interactive class, conducted by local and international volunteers. At Nagarjun Thulargaun Secondary School, two french, one swiss and two nepali volunteers presented their first classes to the 7th, 8th and 9th grade. Each grade gets three classes in the context of their social studies class.
The first day focuses on the definition of human trafficking. It’s important for the students to understand what to consider human trafficking, and what kind of types there are. A reference to the nepali laws about the subject as well as the human rights help them to set in in a structural context.
On the second day it’s all about the why. Why does human trafficking happen, what are its causes. A short documentary about a trafficked girl can give the students an idea of the process. The class was finished with the effects of human trafficking and life after being trafficked, the problems and difficulties of a former victim.
The third day is full of hope. The volunteers work with the students on solutions and ways of prevention. They get an insight of the work that has already been done, the NGO’s that work in this field and how they themself can help to fight it. In the end of the class, some self confidence building will help them to leave the classes as a stronger, more independent young adult.
The three days at Nagarjun Thulargaun Secondary School were an amazing experience for the volunteers. Not only did they get their first insight of a nepali school, but they got to interact with interested, clever students that are eager to learn and grow. “It was lovely to learn from them – it’s not that we are just teaching them, they help us see the whole subject of human trafficking through their eyes!“, Anaelle, an international volunteer from France, said.
The volunteers felt so encouraged by the students that they decided to come back to this school and work on a follow up project. But more about that later.
