VIN is working to empower the women of Jitpurphedi area and in the same context, VIN conducted women empowerment classes at Tarkeshwor municipality-8 Tinpiple, Jitpurphedi. Two volunteers from VIN- one international volunteer Leah O’ Hava from Canada and a local volunteer are running the women empowerment classes in Tinpiple community. This week they have already conducted three classes in the same issue.
VIN has recognized that the status of women in Jitpurphedi is not as that of other Nepali women from the urban area. Here most of the women are illiterate and are less exposed to the life skills. They are not even aware of the women rights issues. So, for their awareness, the women empowerment classes were conducted and such classes will continue for few more weeks. VIN is looking forward to benefit the women of different communities of Jitpurphedi in multiple ways.
The participants in the class were first informed about the issues of women rights. More than half of the female population from rural area are unaware of their rights and provisions made by the government for women. So, even the awareness about their rights can empower them as knowledge of these issues can help them fight for their right. So, in the empowerment classes run by VIN they were taught of their rights, different life skills and were given access to the resources from within and beyond the community.
The participants of the classes were engaged in the discussion about healthy relationships, domestic violence and how to address and deal with these problem in community level. They were also inspired to talk openly about the issues of women rights whenever they experience domination, unequal treatment, and abuse in any sector- be it their home or in community. They were also informed about the nature of unhealthy relationships and domestic violence.
VIN also offered classes on Assertive Communication, Goal-Setting and Decision Making to this group of women. The goal of these classes is to build the technical life skills of the women so that they have opportunities to increase their economic activity in their homes and in the market. Technical classes such as soap-making and jewelry-making will be offered in the near future. Through these lessons the women of the village will be more educated about their rights as women will be more confident and become prepared to deal with unhealthy relationships and domestic violence.
