The volunteers of Volunteers Initiative Nepal(VIN) who had been working to construct toilet at Kavresthali Higher Secondary School constructed septic tank for the toilet as well. On 6th December, the volunteers who were volunteering for construction were involved to seal the septic tank for the new toilets of the school. There was a lot of hard physical work in the work for those volunteering for construction of the toilet. The volunteers had to manually move heavy concrete slabs several metres using a makeshift bamboo and rope system. Some volunteers would pull the rope while others simultaneously used the bamboo as leverage to push the slab into place. Bamboo was also used as a track to slide the slabs over.
The work started slowly, with just six people volunteering for construction working together to move the first slab into place. It wasn’t long before they encountered their first problem, as the slab began to crack and bend when it was half way across the slab. After much consideration of possible solutions, it was eventually decided to move the slab back to the end of the septic tank, where it would have three points of support to prevent it from collapsing.
Much to the relief of the six volunteers who were volunteering for construction, further four volunteers arrived shortly after, the extra muscle making the remaining five slabs much easier than the first. They still needed all their strength, but the work progressed much faster, and, with the additional help of some local men and school students, the French, Danish, Australian, and Local Nepali volunteers were able to complete the job before the end of the day.
