Three hundred women from Okhaldhunga are oriented about reproductive health care

An awareness campaigns on reproductive health care are conducted with about 300 local women from ward 1 and 2 of Siddhicharan municipality, Okhaldhunga.  Altogether 18 campaigns are organized, one campaign in each ward from the past Taluwa and Thulachap VDCs.  The campaigns lasted about 1-1.5 hours and in average 16 women are present. In the campaigns 3 topics were included breast cancer, cervix cancer and uterine prolapse. Though it was focus on prevention, it is shared information about the nature and course of these diseases, risk factors, symptoms and treatment. They shared information about disease management and the hospitals where the service are available to treat the problems.
The campaigns are facilitated by two health volunteers from European voluntary Service (EVS) project. They spent 5 months at Okhaldhunga to do the project. First they did research on women’s health, based on research findings they identify that the women are less aware about breast cancer, cervix cancer and uterine prolapse. Also they have low back pain and vaginal discharge.  They found that treatment seeking behavior of women is very low. So, the campaigns are focused on these issues. Women are found enthusiastic about topic. They are actively participated and practice “Self breast examination” as demonstrated by volunteers. It is found that campaigns has motivated women to get treatment on time rather than waiting till it get worst.
“I am happy to be here and get this opportunity to work with women. I am surprised to see the women’s condition particularly on health in this area. It has taught a lot for me in my life. This is a lifelong memorable experience for me. I feel I did something for women who are in need. I hope the campaign I did has supported to increase the awareness level of women.” said by Agota, a Hungarian volunteer for EVS project.
