VIN conducted First Aid Training for the local women health volunteers in the Tarkeshwor Municipality ward 4, 5 and 6. The four hour long interactive training was conducted in Kavresthali local health post on 26th May,2016. The program was attended by 19 local women health volunteers. The four trainers including VIN staff member Dr, Laxmi Ghimre, international VIN volunteers Pinar Aktas, Karin Smit- both medical students and Debaki Adhikari- local VIN volunteer conducted the training.
The training was conducted with the objective of improving the quality of medical care in Tarkeshwor community. The local women health volunteers were trained on how to improve the quality and availability of first aid service. The major focus of the training was on cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Besides, the participants were also informed about what kind of first aid to be conducted in different cases.
The CPR training covered fainting and unconsciousness issues. The participants learned how to provide chest compressions and rescue breaths as first aid until any professional help arrive. The participants were taught first aid treatment for burns, bleeding, poisoning and snake/dog bites as well. The participants were also trained on how to treat traumatic accident, choking and suicide cases.
The training started by obtaining how well informed were trainees about the first aid issue, to which VIN found that almost half of the participants knew things more or less. Different materials such as dummy to practice, visual charts to display illustrations in detail were used in the training, and to make it even more interactive, different questions were asked to the trainees and they were asked to role play and give presentation. The reason to make the training interactive was to make sure that every participant understands the issues in detail. These kinds of interactions helped to make the training even more effective.
