25th April, 2014: VINs Emergency Risk and Disaster management’s interns from Denmark have been in Jitpur from Monday to Thursday with a mission to help the community build latrines (toilet constructions). These groups of 6 interns were all set to start their new experience. The group of 4 interns started digging two holes that each had to be 1, 80 m deep and 1, 60 m wide. The other two volunteers were sick. As per them, they realized that there was a big different of the quality of the soil. In one of the holes the dirt was nice and muddy and easy to dig up. In the other hole the dirt was very dry and with lots of big rocks so that was a bigger challenges to make the acceptable depth.
After another day of hard physical work both holes were finished. On the third day only two members of our group could participate in the work because the rest was sick at the hotel, but the two members who went to Jitpur started on digging a third holes. On the fourth day for the first time, they all went to Jitpur. Their task was still to dig the third hole but it was a bit easier when all six of us could participate so they finished the last hole but they made it 1, 80 m deep and 2, 10 m wide so it was a lot bigger than the two others. They were also invited by the community people for the lunch. On their way back home instead of waiting for the next bus to arrive they went on the back of a truck that had to transport cement bags of 50 kg each. They helped the man load and unload the heavy bags on the truck, to his great relief. They all stood on top of the load in the evening sun and let the wind clean the most of the dust and dirt off us. It was without a doubt an incredible experience for all of them and something they wouldn’t be without. They arrived at hotel at 18.15 o’clock after being active since 9.00 o’clock they all rushed to the shower and spent the rest of the evening at a restaurant and our hotel rooms. They were tired but very happy with their accomplishment from first week at VIN.
