You’ll have the chance to work on meaningful projects, from environmental conservation and building schools to teaching children and improving health awareness. Your efforts will leave a lasting mark on the community, empowering it to grow and thrive.
2. Build Stronger Teams
Volunteering together as a group is an incredible team-building experience. You will collaborate on meaningful projects, learn to communicate effectively and grow closer as a team. Whether you’re a corporate team, a high school group, a university student group, or just a group of friends, you’ll leave Nepal with stronger bonds and a sense of accomplishment.
3. Immerse in Nepali Culture
Nepal is known for its friendly people and rich culture. You will experience the local way of life as a group, enjoy traditional Nepali food, and participate in cultural activities. You will develop a deep respect for the community you’re helping and gain a better understanding of the world.
4. Create Lifelong Memories
Your volunteer trip will be an unforgettable adventure. Whether teaching in a classroom, planting trees or building infrastructure, you’ll share these moments with your group and build memories that will last a lifetime. This experience will not only change the lives of the people you help but also transform you.
Before your group begins their volunteering adventure, here are some key things to learn and prepare for:
1. Understanding Nepal’s Culture
Nepal has a rich culture, and it is important to respect and learn about local customs, beliefs, and traditions. Your group will benefit from understanding the Nepali way of life, which will help avoid misunderstandings and build stronger relationships with the local community. Simple things like greetings, eating customs, and dressing appropriately can go a long way.
2. Volunteer Responsibilities
When volunteering as a group, knowing your roles and responsibilities is essential. Your group will need to:
- Work together effectively to achieve project goals
- Respect the local community’s way of doing things
- Respect local cultural values and norms
- Follow safety guidelines for personal health and well-being
- Understand the daily schedules and tasks that you will be involved in
ViN staff will guide and support your group throughout the project, ensuring everything runs smoothly.
3. Health and Safety Guidelines
Your group must stay healthy and safe during your trip. Make sure you get the necessary vaccinations and bring any personal medication. You must also follow ViN’s safety and security guidelines, such as wearing suitable clothing, using mosquito repellent, and practicing good hygiene. ViN will provide you with all the information you need to stay safe.
4. Local Etiquette
Understanding local etiquette is crucial. For example, it is common to remove shoes before entering someone’s home or place of worship. Always be polite and show respect to elders and community leaders. These small gestures help foster good relationships with the people you’re helping.
5. Preparing Logistically
- Travel Arrangements: ViN will help your group with travel arrangements, including booking flights and arranging transport from the airport to your volunteer accommodation.
- What to Pack: Be sure to pack light, practical clothing suitable for Nepal’s climate. You may also want to bring supplies like school materials, hygiene kits, or sports equipment to donate to the communities you’ll be working in. ViN may send you the list of things you need to bring.
- Insurance: ViN recommends that all group members have travel insurance for the trip.
ViN offers various group volunteer projects to suit various interests and skills. Here are some of the types of projects your group can participate in:
1. Educational Projects
What You’ll Do:
- Teach English, math, science, computer skills, arts and crafts, sports, music, or life skills in rural schools. Organize workshops on topics like health, leadership, and personal development. Mentor children and support teachers.
Why It Matters:
- Education is critical to empowering future generations. By teaching and mentoring, you can help children gain the skills they need to improve their lives.
2. Community Development Projects
What You’ll Do:
- Your group will collaborate with local people to create lasting changes in their communities by working on infrastructure projects such as building water systems, schools, libraries, homes, and water tanks, creating community centers, and improving sanitation.
Why It Matters:
- Community development projects are vital for improving the daily lives of people in rural Nepal. These projects help provide clean water, better health conditions, and spaces for education and socializing.
3. Environmental and Conservation Projects
What You’ll Do:
- Participate in permaculture garden with rural farmers, tree planting, waste management initiatives, and environmental education campaigns. Your group will work to promote sustainability and conserve the natural environment in Nepal.
Why It Matters:
- Nepal’s environment faces significant challenges due to climate change and global warming. Volunteering in environmental projects helps protect the land, water, air, and wildlife for future generations.
4. Health and Well-being Projects
What You’ll Do:
- Provide health education and first aid, distribute hygiene kits, assist in medical camps, and clean and organize public health centers. Your group will promote good health practices and help reduce preventable diseases in rural communities.
Why It Matters:
- Access to healthcare is limited in many rural areas of Nepal. Your efforts will help improve the health and well-being of local communities by promoting hygiene and sanitation, nutrition, and preventative care.
5. Disaster Relief and Reconstruction Projects
What You’ll Do:
- Your group will help rebuild communities affected by natural disasters like earthquakes, floods, and landslides and affected families by distributing aid, rebuilding homes, water systems, and schools, and providing emotional support to those who have lost everything.
Why It Matters:
- Nepal is prone to earthquakes and other natural disasters, such as landslides and floods. Your group’s involvement will help people recover and rebuild their lives.
6. Women’s Empowerment and Gender Equality Projects
What You’ll Do:
Your group will empower women by facilitating workshops, supporting local women’s cooperatives, and providing education on gender equality, women’s rights, and anti-human trafficking. You may also organize activities that address issues like gender-based violence, economic independence, and health awareness, ensuring women in rural communities have access to the tools they need for empowerment.
Why It Matters:
In rural Nepal, women often face challenges related to gender inequality, domestic violence, trafficking, and limited opportunities. Your efforts in women’s empowerment can help break these barriers, enabling women to gain greater economic independence, improve their families’ well-being, and participate more actively in their communities. By promoting gender equality, your group will contribute to building a more just and inclusive society.
7. Youth Empowerment and Leadership Building Projects
What You’ll Do:
In this project, your group will work with local youth to enhance their leadership skills and build their confidence. Activities include organizing leadership, career development, entrepreneurship-building workshops, mentoring young people, and creating platforms for youth to express their voices. Your group may also be involved in life skills education, such as teaching public speaking, teamwork, and decision-making, which can help the youth navigate their future with confidence and leadership.
Why It Matters:
Nepal’s youth are a powerful force for change. However, many young people in rural areas lack access to leadership opportunities and mentorship. By working on youth empowerment projects, your group will help equip the next generation with the skills they need to lead and advocate for their communities. Youth leadership is critical for creating sustainable development and positive social change.

Your Experience/ Setting
Upon your arrival at Kathmandu Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA), you will receive a warm welcome and be transported to your hotel or hostel. If you are already in Nepal before the start of your placement, we can make alternative arrangements for you. You will undergo a comprehensive two- to three-day induction program after arrival. This induction will provide valuable information about your project and general information about the Nepalese language, culture, health, safety, and security. It is also an excellent opportunity to connect with fellow volunteers and interns who can become your companions for sightseeing and a source of support throughout your volunteer placement.
During the induction period, you will be accommodated in a budget hotel or hostel arranged by VIN. However, most of the VIN experience involves living with a Nepalese host family. While this immersion is essential for a complete experience, we understand that it can be challenging as you adapt to a new culture and adjust to facilities that may be more basic than you are accustomed to. Don’t worry; all our host families have experience accommodating volunteers, although their English-speaking abilities may vary. Also, you will have 24-hour access to our staff members for support and assistance throughout your placement.
Volunteers will be assigned to one of VIN’s working areas, which include Tarakeshor Municipality in Kathmandu, Taluwa, Thulachhap, and Bhadaure in Okhaldhunga, and Okharpouwa and Kaule in the Nuwakot district. While at the working site, volunteers are requested to bring their lunch box, water bottle, safety gear, face mask, and any other essential belongings. We advise volunteers to dress comfortably and modestly, preferably with long sleeves. Please get in touch with us for guidance and support if you want to raise project funds or collect project-specific resources. This will help the community a lot.
Schedule and Commitment
You will work five to six days a week, up to six hours per day. You may propose your preferred time and hours; however, the working time period will be dependent on the institution you have been placed. A minimum of 2 weeks’ time commitment is expected of a volunteer. The longer you commit; the better impact you can make. You should be willing to commit a certain amount of your free time and energy, show a lot of commitment and be a good listener. You are expected to work constructively and co-operatively maintaining good reputation and standards at all times. Volunteer should abide by relevant security concerns and access procedures. Moreover, you should be receptive and positive to performance appraisal, advice and feedback. Throughout your placement, you will have the full support of VIN. Your safety is our highest priority.
