Program Fees Agroforestry

VIN seeks volunteers or interns with agroforestry experience to bring a diverse, profitable and sustainable system of land use to Nepal.  Work with our partners at ‘Kaule-Ev’ to help Nepali farmers turn away from traditional methods and consequent environmental impacts, towards an integrated, sustainable farming methods.

Across its varied geography Nepal has limited land suitable for agriculture; approximately 20 percent.  Still, near to 80 percent of the population depend upon farming for a living.  The traditional style of farming in Nepal is ‘terrace farming’; where receding flat surfaces are cut into a sloped plain.  While labour intensive, this practice also threatens to cause soil erosion, water pollution, and a depletion of the plant and animal species, seriously jeopardising the ecological balance of hilly landscapes.

Work with our partner, Kaule-Ev, in Okharpauwa Village Development Community (VDC) to introduce Agroforestry, a sustainable farming alternative.  Agroforestry adopts an integrated approach to farming, using the interactive benefits of combining trees and shrubs with crops and/or livestock, the result being a more productive, profitable and healthy use of the land.

VIN’s overriding mission is the empowerment of marginalised communities, focusing on women and children.  Since 2007 we have worked with Jitpurphedi VDC, using our own integrated approach to community development.  We are now doing foundation work with Okhaldhunga district, in the Everest Region.  The provision of economic tools necessary for independent well-being, is a principal pillar of our work.  The Kaul-Ev project supports this principal and we are keen to see it develop and succeed.

VIN seeks volunteers or interns with agroforestry experience.  You will help on farmers’ land, help renovate farm land and teach English to the farmers and their children.  During your placement you will live with a local Nepali host family, enabling you to become fully immersed in the language and culture around you.
